Plate Tectonics

TermDefinition
Asthenosphere A layer where it is a solid but it acts like a liquid
Subduction When one tectonic plate goes under another
Seafloor spreading Where new ocean crust comes and old ocean plates goes away
Mantle convection A cycle that moves tectonic plates by heating and cooling
Ridge push When lava hardens and pushes the plate away
Slab pull Its when older,cooler plates sinks at the subduction zone
Lava The hot liquid that is outside of a volcano
Magma The hot liquid that is underground
Tectonic plate A big chunk of rock that sits on the mantle
Theory of continental drift A theory created by Weneger that plate tectonics move
Convergent boundary When two plates are going to each other
Divergent boundary When two plates are going apart
Transform boundary When two plates are sliding against each other
Hot spot Its when high temperature plumes of magma rise to the surface
Epicenter (in regards to earthquakes) It is located above the focus
Focus (in regards to earthquakes) A point in the ground that makes the earthquake
Pangaea When all land was together
Geohazard A area that could lead to damage
Reverse fault Formed by having two plates forced together by compression
Strike-slip fault Where two blocks move horizontally
Normal fault Where the hanging wall goes down
Compression Where material is all compressed together
Tension When something is pulling and the more you pull something the more tension
Shearing When you are pulling something in one side and pull in the other side
Felsic Light color minerals in igneous rock
Mafic Dark color minerals in igneous rock
