| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Asthenosphere | A layer where it is a solid but it acts like a liquid |
| Subduction | When one tectonic plate goes under another |
| Seafloor spreading | Where new ocean crust comes and old ocean plates goes away |
| Mantle convection | A cycle that moves tectonic plates by heating and cooling |
| Ridge push | When lava hardens and pushes the plate away |
| Slab pull | Its when older, cooler plates sinks at the subduction zone |
| Lava | The hot liquid that is outside of a volcano |
| Magma | The hot liquid that is underground |
| Tectonic plate | A big chunk of rock that sits on the mantle |
| Theory of continental drift | A theory created by Weneger that plate tectonics move |
| Convergent boundary | When two plates are going to each other |
| Divergent boundary | When two plates are going apart |
| Transform boundary | When two plates are sliding against each other |
| Hot spot | Its when high temperature plumes of magma rise to the surface |
| Epicenter (in regards to earthquakes) | It is located above the focus |
| Focus (in regards to earthquakes) | A point in the ground that makes the earthquake |
| Pangaea | When all land was together |
| Geohazard | A area that could lead to damage |
| Reverse fault | Formed by having two plates forced together by compression |
| Strike-slip fault | Where two blocks move horizontally |
| Normal fault | Where the hanging wall goes down |
| Compression | Where material is all compressed together |
| Tension | When something is pulling and the more you pull something the more tension |
| Shearing | When you are pulling something in one side and pull in the other side |
| Felsic | Light color minerals in igneous rock |
| Mafic | Dark color minerals in igneous rock |
