Term | Definition |

ecosystem | all living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) things in an area |
terrestrial ecosystem | land based ecosystem |
aquatic ecosystem | water based ecosystem |
forest | high density of trees; deer, hawks, mountain lions, racoons, foxes |
deciduous tree | leaves change colors and fall off; goes dormant for winter |
coniferous tree | evergreen trees (such as Pine) never lose their leaves |
grassland | big open spaces with few bushes and trees, fertile soil, and tall grasses; grazing animals such as zebra and antelope |
tropical rainforest | near the equator and receives plenty of rain; variety of tall trees and plants; animals include monkeys, jaguars, boa constrictors |
tundra | near the North Pole with permafrost and freezing temperatures |
taiga | south of the tundra; dense evergreen forests; cold winters; animals hibernate, fly south (lynx, bobcats, deer, moose) |
desert | extreme heat and dryness; cactus; animals and plants adapt by storing water and seeds |
biome | similar ecosystems throughout the world grouped together |
pond | small body of freshwater surrounded by land; shallow waters |
lake | large body of freshwater surrounded by land; deeper waters |
ocean | large body of salt water |
estuary | body of water in which freshwater from a river meets and mixes with the salt water from the ocean |
salt marsh | flat area of land where salt water overflows |
