Ecosystems

| producer | plants that make their own food |
| ecosystem | an environment where all the living and nonliving things interact |
| consumer | living things that eat other living things |
| habitat | area or place where organisms live in an ecosystem |
| herbivore | an animal that eats plants |
| population | all the members of one species that live within an area of an ecosystem |
| fossil | remains or mark of an animal or plant that lived long ago |
| food chain | the transfer of energy from one organism to another by eating and being eaten. |
| carnivore | an animal that eats meat |
| extinct | no longer existing as a species |
| food web | system of overlapping food chains in which the flow of energy branches out in many different directions |
| omnivore | animal that eats smaller animals and plants |
| paleontologist | a scientist who studies fossils |
| competition | occurs when two or more living things need the same resources in order to survive |
| decomposer | organism that breaks down plant and animal waste and remains |
