Vital Signs

| Afebrile | No temperature |
| Apical Pulse | central pulse at apex of heart located at the 5th intercostal space midclavicular line |
| Apnea | no respirations (absence of) |
| Arrythmia | irregular heart rhythm |
| Ausculatory Gap | temporary disappearance of sounds over brachial artery when cuff pressure is high |
| Bradycardia | slow heartbeat under 60 bpm |
| Bradypnea | slow respirations under 10 bpm |
| Diastolic Pressure | pressure of blood against arterial walls when ventricles are at rest normal range 60-80 mmHg |
| Dysrhythmia | irregular pulse rhythm |
| Eupnea | normal breathing in rate and depth |
| Exhalation | breathing out, gas movement from lungs into atmosphere |
| Expiration | breathing out, gas movement from lungs into atmosphere |
| Febrile | patient with a fever, feverish |
| Hyperpyrexia | very high fever, 105.8F+ |
| Hypothermia | core body temperature below normal range (under 96.8F) |
| Pyrexia | fever, body temperature above normal range (99.5F+) |
| Hypertension | high blood pressure 140+/90+ |
| Hyperventilation | deep, rapid respirations |
| Hypotension | abnormally low blood pressure, under 100 systolic |
| Orthostatic Hypotension | blood pressure decrease due to position change i.e. standing or sitting |
| Inspiration | intake of air into lungs |
| Oxygen Saturation | percentage of hemoglobin binding site occupied by oxygen |
| Pulse | wave of blood created by contraction of left ventricle |
| Respiration | act of breathing, in-taking oxygen and outputting carbon dioxide |
| Systolic Pressure | pressure of blood against arterial walls when ventricles contract normal range 100 - 120 mmHg |
| Tachycardia | rapid pulse, 100+ bpm |
| Tachypnea | abnormally fast respirations, greater than 24 per minute |
| Ventilation | movement of air in and out of lungs |
