photosynthesis
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Overall reaction: formula & words; products & reactants | Formula: 6 CO2 + 6 H20 --> C6H1206 + 6 O2 Products: sugar (glucose) & oxygen Reactants: carbon dioxide & water |
| Pigment used: how is it used? How is it activated? What happens when it is activated? | Pigment: Chlorophyll Used: Absorbs light (all colors except green) [light is a form of energy; any compound that absorbs light absorbs energy] Activated: when it absorbs light |
| Where does it take place? | in the chloroplast! |
| Parts of the chloroplast: know all three, colors produced | Parts: Photosystem:light-colecting units of the chloroplast Thylakoid:saclike photosynthetic membran Stroma: the space outiside the thylakoid membranes Grana:stacks of thylakoids\ |
| Two processes of photosynthesis: names | Light-dependent reactions Light-independent reactions (calvin cycle) |
| Two processes of photosynthesis:where they occur | Light-dependent: thylakoid membrane Light-independent: stroma |
| Rate dependent on...: why/how does light intensity affect the rate of reaction? | increase light --> increase rate of photosynthesis after a certain level is reached, plant reaches its maximum rate of photosynthesis |
| Two processes of photosynthesis: reactants of each process & products of each process | Light-Dependent: Reactants:ADP & H2O & NADP+ Products: O2 & ATP & NADPH Light-Independent: Reactants: ATP & NADPH Products: Sugar (& Water) |
| Rate dependent on... | Water ; Temperature ; Light intensity |
| Rate dependent on...: why/how does water & temperature affect the rate of reaction? | Water: water is one of the raw materials of photosynthesis --> a shortage of water can slow or stop photosynthesis Temperature: enzymes work best at 0-35 Celsius. Temperatures +/- damage enzymes, slowing down (or stopping) rate of photosynthesis |
| What is NECESSARY for this to happen? | water - raw material (reactant) of photosynthesis |
| Plant Pigment Lab: what were we trying to find out? What did we find out? | trying to find out: what plant pigments can be found in differenct colored leaves? Found out: spinach (green leaf) contains carotenes, chlorophyll a & b, & xanthophyll Red leaf: contains anthocyanin, xanthophyll, and carotenes |
| What happens when the pigment is activated? | When chlorophyll absorbs light, much of the energy is transferred directly to electrons in the chlorophyll molecule, raising the energy levels of these electrons. These high energy e- make photosynthesis work. |
