QuestionAnswer
What is an element? a substance that can't be broken down into simpler chemical substances.
What is an atom? the smallest particle of an element that has the characteristics of that element.
What is a nucleus? The center of an atom.
What is an isotope? Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
What is a compound? A substance that is composed of atoms of two or more different elements that are chemically combined.
What is a covalent bond? aA force that holds two atoms that share electrons together.
What is a molecule? A group of atoms held together by covalent bonds.
What is an ion? A charged particle made of atoms.
What is an ionic bond? The attractive force between two ions of opposite charge.
What is metabolism? All of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism.
What is a mixture? A combination of substances in which the individual components retain their own properties.
What is a solution? A mixture in which one or more substances (solutes) are distributed evenly in another substance (solvent).
What is pH? A measure of how acidic or basic a solution is.
What is an acid? Any substance that forms hydrogen ions(H+) in water.
What is a base? Any substance that forms hydroxide ions(OH−) in water.
What is a polar molecule? A molecule with an unequal distribution of charge; that is , each molecule has a positive end and a negative end.
What is a hydrogen bond? An attraction of opposite charges between hydrogen and oxygen that forms a weak bond.
What is diffusion? The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
What is dynamic equilibrium? Result of diffusion where there is continuous movement of particles but no overall change in concentration.
What is an isomer? A compound that has the same chemical formula but different three-dimensional structures.
What is a polymer? A large molecule formed when many smaller molecules bond together.
What is a carbohydrate? A biomolecule composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen with a ratio of about 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom for every carbon atom.
