Term | Definition |
---|---|
chemical bond | interaction between atoms. |
compound | a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture or made up or consisting of two or more existing parts or elements. |
electron dot diagram | A model of an atom in which each dot represents a valence electron. |
valence electron | an electron of an atom, located in the outermost shell (valence shell) of the atom, that can be transferred to or shared with another atom. |
bond | join or be joined securely to something else, especially by means of an adhesive substance, heat, or pressure. |
chemical formula | a mathematical relationship or rule expressed in symbols. |
covalent bond | the bond formed by the sharing of a pair of electrons by two atoms. |
molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
polar molecule | A polar molecule is a molecule containing polar bonds where the sum of all the bond's dipole moments is not zero. |
conduct | the manner in which a person behaves, especially on a particular occasion or in a particular context. |
ion | an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. |
ionic bond | the electrostatic bond between two ions formed through the transfer of one or more electrons. |
metallic bond | the type of chemical bond between atoms in a metallic element, formed by the valence electrons moving freely through the metal lattice. |
