Roof Framing Trade Terms

Bottom Chord The lower member of a truss
Gable The triangular wall enclosed by sloping ends of a ridged roof
Hip Roof A roof with four sides or slopes extending toward the center
Ribband A 1x4 fastened to the truss to prevent twisting and bowing
Strongback An L shaped arrangement of lumber used to support ceiling joists
Stick Built Framing Framing method where members are installed one at a time
Dormer Provide additional light and ventilation for the attic
Unit Rise The amount a rafter will rise per foot of runPurlin
Purlin A horizontal support parallel to the plate
Lookout A structural member used to frame an overhang
Open Web Steel Joist Steel joist designed to hold roof loads
Spreader Bar Rigging device used to lift long loads
Tag Line Rope attached to a load to control its sitting
Tie Down Metal anchoring system used to fasten framing members to one another
Bundle A package containing a certain number of shingles or shakes
Pitch Rise and Run of a roof rafter
Roof Sheathing Plywood
Slope Rise and Run of a roof surface
Underlayment Felt Paper
Asphalt Roofing Cement Adhesive between shingles
Saddle Diverts water from structures such as chimneys
Square 100 square feet of shingles
Valley The internal part of the angle formed by the meeting od two roofs
Exposure the distance between the exposed edges of the shingle
Ridge Top of the roof
Scrim A loosely woven fabric
Selvage The section of a section of shingles that is not covered by aggregate
Valley Flashing Water proof protection at a roofs intersection
Base Flashing Protective sealing places around any areas exposed to leaks
Cap Flashing Sealant that overlaps the base
Side Lap adjacent shingles that overlap
Vent Stack Flashing Seal Vents the protrude through the roof
Wall Flashing Sealant the protects where the roof meets exterior walls
