| Self Concept or how you think about yourself | directly affects your self-esteem or how you feel about yourself |
| Identity- | who do you think you are,What do you bring to the table |
| Body Image | Involves attitudes related to the body including appearance,femininity,and masculinity,youthfulness,health and strength. |
| As you get older the more you think | people should love me for who i am.Body image is less important. |
| Role Performance- | Is a way in which a person views his ability to carry out significant roles |
| Common Roles include | Mother,father,wife,husband daughter,son,sister,brother,employee,employer,nurse.etc. |
| Self Esteem | Is an individuals overall sense of self worth the emotional evaluation of self concept. |
| Self esteem is positive | when one feels capable,worthwhile,and competent |
| Self evaluation- | Is an ongoing mental process |
| A positive sense of self worth,or self esteem | is an important factor in determining how a individual functions in the world |
| Identity Stressors | Stressors throughout life affect an individuals identity,but identity is particularly vulnerable during adolescence,which is a time of great change |
| Adolescents are trying to adjust to | the physical,emotional and mental changes of increasing maturity.which result in insecurity and anxiety. |
| Retirement for some mean | the loss of an important means of achievement |
| Some people at retirement begin to | reevaluate their identities and accomplishments |
| More and more older people are working | past the traditional retirement age or change careers following retirement |
| Body Image Stressors | Changes in the appearance or function of a body part will require an adjustment in body image |
| An individuals perception of the body change and the relative importance placed on the body image in the persons self-concept | will effect the significance of the loss or change. |
| Example-If a woman considers her breast key to her feminiinity,a mastectomy will | negatively affect her body image |
| Role performance Stressors | Throughout life a person undergoes many life changes |
| Normal changes associated with maturation | result in changes in role performance |
| For Example-When a women has a child,she becomes a mother. | The new role of mother will involve many changes in behavior if the women is going to be successful. |
| All people must adapt to two major changes that occur with aging: | changes in the work role and in the role of spouse or partner |
| Self Esteem Stressors | Individuals with high self-esteem are generally better able to cope with demands and stressors than those with low self esteem |
| Low self worth contributes to | feeling unfulfilled and misunderstood and result in depression and anxiety |
| Self esteem stressors vary with developmental stages | If a child believes that he is unable to meet his parents expectations or his parents harshly criticize or inconsistently discipline him,this will reduce his self worth. |
| The self-esteem of an adolescent is also vulnerable because | the adolescent directs so much energy to worrying about appearance,searching for identity,and being overly concerned about what others think. |

| Numerous stressors including unknown diagnosis | the need to make changes in lifestyle,and change in functioning are present,and you need to address them. |
| In Acute Care setting- | There is often more than one stressor,thus increasing the overall stress level for the patient and family |
| You will also care for patients who | are faced with the need to adapt to an altered body image as a result of surgery or other physical change |
