CVC Complications
Complications of Central Lines
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Occlusion | Central line becomes blocked by debris and/or clots |
| Embolism | Foreign body in the circulatory system - may be air, blood clot, or a piece of the catheter breaking off; may occlude blood vessels |
| System or local infections | Central lines are a foreign body, which increases infection risk |
| Nerve injury | Most commonly occurs during insertion; nerves may be damaged |
| Cardiac tamponade | Blood accumulating in the pericardial sac; may occur from damage during central line insertion |
| Hemorrhage | Excessive bleeding; may occur due to vessel damage with central line insertion |
| Pneumothorax | Air in the chest cavity; may result from damage to the pleura and/or lung during central line insertion |
| Hydrothorax | Water/fluid in the chest cavity; may occur as a result of catheter migration and/or pleural damage during central line insertion |
| Hemothorax | Blood in the chest cavity; may occur due to damage to the pleura during central line insertion |
