Phases of the Moon
6.E.1.1 Moon Phases
| Term | Definition |

| 8 moon phases | new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter moon, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter moon (3rd), waning crescent |
| 27.3 days | The Moon completes one orbit around Earth every 27.3 days |
| 29.5 days | how long it takes for the moon to complete its phases |
| axis | the imaginary line that the Earth rotates on |
| 1st quarter moon | when the moon is only half way lit and the light is on the right |
| full moon | when the moon is completely lit |
| last quarter (3rd quarter moon) | when the moon is half way lit and the light is on the left |
| new moon | no part of the moon is lit...all of it is dark |
| orbit | the curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around another object |
| rotate | to spin around |
| (natural) satellite | any celestial body in space that orbits around a larger body ex. the moon |
| waxing | the moon is gaining light and it is on the right |
| waning | the moon is losing light and it is on the left |
| crescent moon | only a sliver of the moon is lit |
| gibbous moon | 3/4 of the moon is lit |
