Weather Terms

Evaporation Liquid water turning into water vapor (a gas)
Humidity The measure of how much water vapor is in the air.
Condensation a gas changing to a liquid
Cumulus Clouds Clouds that look like fluffy piles of cotton.
Stratus Clouds Clouds that usually cover all or most of the sky.
Cirrus Clouds Wispy, feathery clouds at a high level in the sky.
Air mass A HUGE body of air that has similar temperature and humidity.
Tropical Air mass WARM AIR MASS – form over warm, tropical area.
Polar Air mass COLD AIR MASS - air masses form in regions in the far north or far south.
Continental Air mass Air masses that form over land.
Maritime Air mass Air masses that form over oceans.
Front A boundary between two air masses.
Tornado Destructive rotating column of air that has high wind speeds and may be visible as a funnel-shape cloud.
Hurricane A severe storm that develops over tropical OCEANS with strong winds that spiral inward toward the low pressure center
