Plate Tectonics

Plate Tectonics Review

QuestionAnswer
Which layers of Earth make up one compositional layer? The inner and outer core
What type of rock forms from hardened lava and magma? Igneous
What was Pangea? A single land mass that is now separated into continents
How do erosion and deposition change Earth's surface? They round out or flatten some land surfaces
At what type of plate boundary does subduction occur? Convergent boundary
What is subduction? When the denser oceanic plate moves under the continental plate at a convergent boundary (volcanoes and earthquakes are common here)
How does an erupting volcano help us learn about the interior of Earth? Lava helps us know that there is very hot material within the Earth
How does convection work within the mantle? Hot magma becomes less dense, which causes it to rise, where it becomes less dense and sinks. This convection current is what drives the movement of plate tectonics.
To determine the relative age of rocks, what do scientists use? The Law of Superposition
At a convergent boundary, when plates collide, they uplift or push up the land. What is a well-known landform that was created this way? Mount Everest
Continents move due to... Sea Floor Spreading
At convergent boundaries sometimes volcanic mountains form due to: Subduction
When there is rapid change in tectonic plates, it can be felt on the surface of the Earth as an: Earthquake
Earthquakes and volcanoes occur due to: High temperatures in Earth's mantle

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
