Weather and Climate Vocabulary and Descriptions

humidity | How much water vapor is in the air |
climate | The weather condition of a certain area over a LONG PERIOD OF TIME |
weather hazard | A dangerous weather event that threatens life and property |
precipitation | Water that falls to the ground in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
wind vane | A tool used to measure the wind direction |
satellite | A tool in space that is used to predict the weather and determine the climate |
rain gauge | A tool for collecting and measuring rainfall |
tropical rainforest | A climate that has warm temperatures throughout the year and has significant rainfall |
polar climate | A climate that has very cold temperatures all year with no precipitation |
flood | A type of severe weather where an enormous amount of water covers land that is usually dry. It rains and rains and rains. It is the most common natural disaster in the United States. |
hurricane | A type of severe weather where a tropical cyclone forms over warm waters and moves toward land. There are threats of powerful winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, tornadoes, and landslides. |
tornado | A type of severe weather where a violently rotating column of air extends from the base of a thunderstorm down to the ground. They can destroy well-made structures, uproot trees, and hurl objects through the air like deadly missiles. |
blizzard | A type of severe snowstorm where strong sustained winds of at least 35 mph last for a prolonged time -- typically 3 hours or more and reduces visibility. A blizzard makes travel conditions dangerous and creates power outages. |
drought | A type of severe weather with a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall. There is so little precipitation that a whole region starts to dry out. People and animals depend on water. Food supplies shrink, and habitats are damaged. |
Explain how severe weather/natural disasters can affect people. | Severe weather and natural disasters can cause people to be injured or even die. Clean air, water, food, and shelters are impacted. People lose their homes, possessions, and even communities. |
