Waves

QuestionAnswer
Waves transmit _____________. energy
Waves do not transmit ____________. matter
vacuum empty space
These waves can transmit energy through a vacuum. Electromagnetic waves
These waves can transmit energy through a vacuum. Mechanical waves
These waves can NOT transmit energy through a vacuum. perpendicular
In transverse waves, particles of the medium move in a direction ______________ to the direction of the wave. parallel
Another name for a longitudinal wave Compression wave
In a surface wave, the particles of the medium move in a __________motion. circular
amplitude the measure of wave energy; the distance from the resting position to the highest or lowest points
energy of the wave varies in _______________ to the amplitude of the wave direct proportion
The _________ the amplitude, the _________ the energy. higher; greater
wavelength of a transverse wave distance between crests and troughs of two consecutive transverse waves
crest Highest parts of a transverse wave
troughs Lowest parts of a transverse wave
Wavelength of a longitudinal wave Distance between compressions and rarefactions
compression Most tightly packed area of a longitudinal wave
rarefaction Most spread out area of a longitudinal wave
frequency Number of wavelengths that pass a point in a given amount of time
How are wavelength and frequency related? inversely proportional
The frequency of a wave _____________ as its wavelength ______________ OR it __________ as its wavelength __________. Increases; decreases OR Decreases; increases
Shorter wavelength = _____ frequency = _____ energy Higher; more
Longer wavelength = ______ frequency = _____ energy Lower; less
Hertz (Hz) Unit of measurement for frequency; one Hertz = one wave per second
pitch The highness or lowness of a sound
Doppler Effect Part One If you are standing still and a car drives past you, the frequency of the sound will change as the car passes you. The sound pitch will be higher as the car is coming towards you and then lower as the car moves away.
Doppler Effect Part Two Its frequency is the same. However, as the car is traveling towards you the speed of the car is causing the sound waves to hit your ear faster or at a higher frequency than the car is making them.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
