Fluid & Electrolytes
Fluid & Electrolytes Part B
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| hypomagnesemia | condition that develops when the amount of magnesium in your body is too low. |
| hypothalmus | the control center for many autonomic functions of the peripheral nervous system. |
| hypovolemia | decreased blood volume |
| interstitial fluid | a liquid — made mostly of water — that fills up the space between the cells of most organisms |
| intracellular | the fluid inside the blood cells |
| intravascular fluid | blood |
| isotonic/iso-osmolar | having the same osmolarity; a solution in which body cells can be bathed without net flow of water across the semipermeable cell membrane |
| laryngospasm | closure of the larynx obstructing the airway |
| milliequivalent | an expression of the chemical combining power of the electrolyte in a fluid |
| nonvolatile metabolic acids | an acid produced in the body from sources other than carbon dioxide, and is not excreted by the lungs |
| osmoreceptor | sensory nerve receptors stimulated by changes in fluid and electrolyte concentrations |
| osmosis | the force that draws water through a semipermeable membrane from a solution of lower solute concentration to a solution of higher concentration. |
| osmotic pressure | how hard the water would “push” to get through the barrier in order to diffuse to the other side. |
| paresthesias | abnormal sensations |
| skin turgor | indicates tension of the skin based on pressure within the cells; a measure of dehydration |
| tetany | repeated skeletal muscle contractions or spasms, seen in the extremities and face, related to increased irritability of the nerves, often associated with hypocalcemia |
| transcellular | passing from one cell to another, through adjacent cell membranes. |
