WM Biology Chapter 9
Vocab Words from Chapter 9
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| ATP | Energy-storing moelcule in cells composed of adenosine molecule, a ribose sugar and three phosphate groups;energy is stored in the moelcules. Chemcial bonds can be used quickly and easily by cells. |
| ADP | Molecule formed from the breaking off of a phosphate group from ATP; results in a release of energy that is used for biological reactions. |
| Photosynethisis | The process that uses the sun's energy to make simple sugars. |
| Light dependent reaction | Phase of photosynthesis, converts light energy into chemical energy. |
| Light independent reaction | The molecules of ATP produced in the light phase of photosynthesis that depend reaction are the used to fuel the light independent reaction. |
| Pigment | Molecule that absorbs the specific wavelength of sunlight. |
| Chlorophyll | Absorbs most wavelengths of light except green. |
| Electron transport chain | A series of protiens embedded in thylekoid membrane. |
| NADP+ | Electron carrier molecule, accepts excited electrons, it becomes NADPH. |
| Photolysis | To replace the lost electrons molecules of water are split in the first photosystem. |
| Calvin cycle | A series of reactions that use carbon dioxide to form sugars. |
| Cellular respiration | The process by which in the mitochondria, breaks down food molecules to produce ATP |
| Anaerobic | The first stage glycolisis, chemical reaction that doesn't require oxygen |
| Aerobic | The last two stages that require oxygen to be completed |
| Glycolisis | Is a series of chemical reactions in the cytoplasm of a cell that break down glocose |
| Cetric acid cycle | A series of chemical reactions similar to the Calvin cycle in that the moelcule used in the first reaction is also one of the end products. |
| Lactic acid fermintation | One of the processes that supplys energy when oxygen is scarce |
| Alcoholic fermintation | Is used by east cells and bacteria to produce CO2 and ethyl alcohol |
