| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Weathering | The wearing away of sediments by water, wind, or ice. |
| Erosion | The moving or carrying away of sediments to a new location. |
| Deposition | The dropping of sediments at a new location. |
| Compaction | The pressure of pressing together sediments. |
| Cementation | When sediments that are pressed together get hot and the minerals melt causing it to stick together like cement or glue |
| Sedimentary Rock | Rock made by the deposits of sediments that form layers. This kind of rock is where most fossils are found. |
| Decay | To go through decomposition |
| Earthquake | Triggered by the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates |
| Volcanoes | Fiery power deep from within the Earth. They are made when thick magma and large amounts of gas build up under the surface. |
| Landslides | Gravity or rain or both pulls rocks and mud down the mountains causing destruction |
| Tsunami | An earthquake in the ocean that causes giant, destructive waves |
| Rapid Changes to Earth's surface | Earthquake, landslide, hurricane, tsunami, and volcanoes |
| Slow changes to Earth's surface | Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition |
| Sediment | Particles of matter that could be sand, silt, shell and other substances that are carries then deposited |
| Delta | Created by the deposition of sediment. Streams and rivers deposit sediments at the mouth of rivers. Triangular shaped. |
| Canyon | A huge valley created by the moving water of a river. Takes millions of years to form. |
| Sand Dune | A mound of sand deposited by the wind. |
| U-shaped Valley | Created by glaciers |
| V-shaped Valley | Made by moving water |
| Landform | An area of land, or a land shape found on the surface of the Earth |
