Deposition/Erosion

TermDefinition
Moving Water Water that is in motion and has the ability to move (erode) and deposit sediments
Runoff Precipitation that flows out over land into streams and rivers
River When streams become larger and wider
V- Shaped Valley Formed from erosion of a river on streams over time
Floodplain An area along a river that forms from sediment deposited when the river over flows its banks
Delta Form from sediment carried to the oceans by rivers
Alluvial Fan A fan shaped mass of material deposited by a stream when the slope of the land decease sharply
Meander The bends in the river's channel
Oxbow Lake A U-shaped lake that formed when a wide meander of a river is cut off
Waterfall An area where water flows over a vertical drop on a river or a stream that meets an eye that falls to lower ground
Glacier Any large mass of ice that moves slowly over land
Valley or Alpine Glacier A long, narrow glacier that forms when snow and ice build up high in a mountain valley
Continental Glacier Is a glacier that covers much of a continent or large island
Plucking (Glacier) The process in which rock fragments freeze to the bottom of a glacier and are carried when the glacier moves
Abrasion (Glacier) Waves pick up sediment in shallow water and wear away (grind) the rock like sand paper
U-Shaped Valley Form when a glacier erodes a river valley from its original V-shaped to a U-shaped
Till Unsorted rock material that is deposited directly by a melting glacier
Moraine A ridge of sediments or rocks are left behind when a glacier melts
Kettle A small depression that forms when a chance of ice is left in a glacial till
Wave Erosion Waves erode the sediments from cliffs and shorelines by impact and abrasion
Sea Stacks Pillars of rocks rising above the water
Sea Caves Hollow areas in rock created by by waves
Sea Arch Forms when waves erode a layer of soft rock is under a layer of harder rock
Sea Cliff Formed when waves erode and under cut rock to produce steep slopes
Beach An area of wave washed sediment (sand, crushed shells and crushed coral) along a coast
Marsh Wetland found at the end of a lake or stream
Barrier Island A long, narrow island that forms along a coast. They protect the coast bay absorbing the energy of waves and storms
Sand Dunes Are both formed and moved by water
Loess Very fertile sediments of quartz, feldspar hornblende, mica, and are deposited by wind
Groundwater The water located within the rocks below the Earth's surface
