What does electrolysis mean? Splitting up ionic compounds using electricity
Why does the electrolyte need to be molten? So the ions are free to move
What charge does the anode have? Positive
What charge does the cathode have? Negative
What is the name for ions that are attracted to the anode? Anion
What is the name for ions that are attracted to the cathode? Cation
What charge does an anion have? Negative
What charge does a cation have? Positive
Which electrode do metal ions go to? Cathode
Which electrode do non-metal ions go to? Anode
What happens to the metal ion when it gets to the cathode? gains electrons
What happens to the non metal ion when it gets to the anode? loses electrons
What do we call it when ions gain electrons? Reduction
What do we call it when ions lose electrons? Oxidation
What is the acronym we can use to remember the charge of electrodes? P.A.N.I.C.
What is the acronym we can use to remember oxidation and reduction? O.I.L.R.I.G.
