Erosion and Deposition
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Moving Water | Water that is in motion and has the ability to move and erode sediments |
Runoff | Precipitation that flows over land and into streams |
River | When streams become longer and wider |
V- Shaped valley | Land formed into a v-shape from a glacier |
Floodplain | An area along a river that forms from the sediments deposited when the river overflows it's banks |
Delta | A fan shaped mass of material deposited at the mouth of a stream |
Alluvial Fan | A fan shaped mass of material deposited by a stream when the slope of land decreases sharply |
Meander | Bends in river channels |
Oxbow Lake | A curved lake formed at a former oxbow where the main stream of the river has a narrow cut |
Waterfall | A cascade of falling water |
Glacier | A large mass of moving ice |
Valley or Alpine Glacier | A long narrow glacier that forms when snow and ice build up high in a mountain valley |
Continental Glacier | A glacier that covers much of a continent or large island |
Plucking | The process in which rock fragments freeze to the bottom of a glacier and are carried away when it moves |
Abrasion | The gouging and scratching of bedrock by rocks |
U-shaped Valley | Form when a glacier erodes a river valley from its original v-shape to a u-shape |
Till | Unsorted rock material that is deposited directly by a melting glacier |
Moraine | A ridge of sediment and rock left behind when a glacier melts |
Kettle | A small depression that forms when a chunk of ice is left in a glacial till |
Wave Erosion | Waves erode parts of rock and the shore |
Sea Stacks | Pillars of rock rising above the water (usually from a collapsed sea arch) |
Sea Cave | Hollow areas in rock created by waves |
Sea Arch | Forms when waves erode a layer of soft rock that is under a layer of hard rock |
Sea Cliff | Steep coastal slope by waves |
Beach | An area of a shoreline made up of material deposited by waves |
Marsh | An area of low lying land in water |
Barrier Island | A long narrow island that forms along the coast by absorbing the energy in waves and storms |
Sand Dunes | Mount/Hill/Ridge of sand |
Loess | Very fertile sediments of quartz, feldspar, hornblende, mica, and clay deposited by the wind |
Groundwater | Water held underground |
Mass Movements | A movement of a section of land down a slope |
