TermDefinition
Atmosphere The envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Lithosphere The rigid outer part of the earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle.
Mantle Is a layer of silicate rock between the crust and the outer core.
Granite A very hard, granular, crystalline, igneous rock consisting mainly of quartz, mica, and feldspar and often used as a building stone.
Streak A long, thin line or mark of a different substance or colour from its surroundings.
Sediment Matter that settles to the bottom of a liquid.
Magma Hot fluid or semi-fluid material below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is formed on cooling.
Hydrosphere All the waters on the earth's surface, such as lakes and seas, and sometimes including water over the earth's surface.
Asthenosphere The upper layer of the earth's mantle, below the lithosphere, in which there is relatively low resistance to plastic flow and convection is thought to occur.
Core The very hot, very dense center of our planet.
Sandstone Sedimentary rock consisting of sand or quartz grains cemented together, typically red, yellow, or brown in colour.
Hardness The quality or condition of being hard.
Deposition The geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to a land form or land mass.
Renewable (of a natural resource or source of energy) not depleted when used.
Biosphere the regions of the surface and atmosphere of the earth or another planet occupied by living organisms.
Crust The outermost solid shell of a rocky planet, dwarf planet, or natural satellite.
Marble A hard crystalline metamorphic form of limestone, typically white with coloured mottlings or streaks.
Quartz A hard mineral consisting of silica.
Geologist An expert in or student of geology.
Erosion He process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents.
Non Renewable Existing in finite quantity; not capable of being replenished.
