Beginning Earth Science

DefinitionTerm
The breaking down of rock by water, wind, or ice. Weathering
The moving or carrying of sediments to a new location. Erosion
The dropping of sediments in a new location. Deposition
Sticking together like glue. Cementation
The pressing together of sediments. Compaction
Rock made by the deposits of sediments that form layers. This kind of rock is where most fossils are found. Sedimentary Rock
Particles of matter could be sand, silt, shell, and other substances. Sediment
Created by the deposition of sediment by water. Streams and rivers deposit sediments at the mouth of a river. They are the large flat areas of land at the mouth of a river. Deltas
A mound of sand deposited by wind. Sand Dune
Made by a glacier scraping through. U-Shaped Valley
Made by moving water. V-Shaped Valley
A huge, moving body of ice. Glacier
When something that is dead goes through a chemical process that breaks it down into the soil making the soil better. Decomposition
A circuit that has more than 1 path for the electricity to take. Parallel Circuit
A circuit that has only 1 path for the electricity to take. Series Circuit
Evidence of the past. Fossils
Fuels formed from the remains of prehistoric animals and plants that were buried in layers of rock and subjected to large amounts of heat and pressure. Fossil Fuels
Resources that can be replaced in a short amount of time. Renewable Resources
Resources that cannot be replaced quickly. Nonrenewable Resources
Made from crops and can be used as an alternative resource like ethanol for cars. Biofuels
The wise use and protection of natural resources. Conservation
Converting waste into reusable materials. Recycle
Tool that measures the wind speed. Anemometer
Rain, snow, sleet, or hail Precipitation
The gradual gathering of precipitation. Accumulation
Water held underground in the Earth. Ground Water
Energy from the Sun Solar Energy
The process by which water is constantly moved around the Earth. Water Cycle
Plants giving off water vapor. Transpiration
Water being carried away across the surface of the Earth. Runoff
To spin on an axis. Rotation
To go all the way around something else. Revolution
The path something takes as it revolves around something else. Orbit
An imaginary line dividing the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Equator
A sloping position. Tilt
This is caused by the Earth's rotation. Day/Night Cycle
These are formed by light being blocked by an object. They will be longest in the early morning/late afternoon and shortest around noon. Shadows
The direction the Sun rises in. East
The direction the Sun sets in. West
Caused by the tilt of the Earth and our orbit around the Sun. Seasons
These are caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon. Tides
How long it takes the Earth to rotate 1 time. 24 hours/ 1 day
How long it takes the Earth to revolve around the Sun one time. 365 days/ 1 year
The order of the planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
This is about how long it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth one time. 28 days
