Sedimentary rocks

QuestionAnswer
What is sediment? Small, solid pieces of materials that come from rocks or living things.
What carries and deposits Sediment in layers? water wind, and ice
What are the four steps to the process that forms sedimentary rock? Erosion, Deposition, Compaction, Cementation.
Erosion water or wind carry away sediments
Deposition sediment settles to the ground.
Compaction process that presses sediment together
cementation sediment is "glued" together to form rock
What are the 3 main groups of sedimentary rocks? Clasic, Orgainic, Chemical rocks
Clastic Rocks sedimentary rock that form when rock fragments squeeze together(forms from sediments of rock)
Shale example of clastic rock that forms from tiny particles of clay
Sandstone example of clastic rock that forms from the sand on beaches, on the ocean floor, in river beds , and in sand dunes.
Conglomerate and breccia example of clastic rock
Organic Rocks forms where the remains of plants and animals are deposited in thinck layers.(
Coal example of organic rock that forms from the remains of swamp plants buried in water.
Limestone example of Organic Rock
Chemical Rock Forms when minerals that are dessolved in a solution crystallize
rocksalt (halite) example of chemical rock
gypsum example of chemical rocks
Uses of Sedimentary Rock? Building materials, decoration, cement, and gravel
How does sedimentary rock form? They form when sediments or the remains of dead plants and animals are compressed.
