Matter

MYP 1 Matter Study Stack

TermDefinition
Matter Matter is anything that has volume and mass
Mass Mass is the amount of matter found in an object The unit of mass is grams (g)
Volume Volume is the space occupied by an object. The unit of volume is centimeter cubed ( cm3)
Matter is made up of particles called atoms, molecules or ions
States of Matter solid, liquid and gas
Density The mass of matter found in one cm3 of a substance
Absolute temperature The temperature at which particles stop moving
Movement of particles Particles of solids vibrate in one place Particles of liquids vibrate, rotate and move around Particles of gases vibrate, rotate and move around
Flow Solid particles cannot flow Liquid particles can flow from one place to another Gas particles can flow from one place to another
Compression and Volume Solids have a fixed volume. They cannot be compressed. Liquids have a fixed volume. They cannot be compressed. Gases have a changeable volume. They can be compressed.
Shape Solids have a fixed shape. Liquids take the shape of the bottom of the container Gases take the shape of the whole container
How do you measure mass of a solid Use a digital balance
How do you measure the mass of a liquid Measure the mass of an empty beaker. Add the water and measure the mass. Subtract the the mass of the empty beaker from the beaker+water.
How do you measure the volume of water Use a measuring cylinder
How do you measure the volume of a cube or cuboid length x height x width (l x h x w) The unit is cm3
How do you measure the volume of an irregular solid? Put the solid in a measuring cylinder filled with a known volume of water. The change in volume is equal to the volume of the solid.
What is the equation for density? mass/volume
What is the unit of density? g/cm3
What is the density of water? 1 g/cm3

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
