ecosystem | communities of organisms interacting with their abiotic environment |
habitat | where an organism lives |
biotic factor | a living, once living thing, or byproduct of a living thing |
abiotic factor | non-living parts of the environment |
producers | organism that can make its own food; autotroph |
species | organisms that can reproduce to create fertile offspring |
consumers | organisms that cannot make their own food; heterotroph |
decomposers | organism that breaks down dead things and waste |
organism | a single living thing |
ecology | study of interactions between organisms and their environment |
population | organisms of the same species that are found in the same place and often interbreed |
community | populations of different species that interact |
natural selection | concept that individuals who are best adapted to survive in their environment will reproduce more than individuals that are not as well adapted |
biome | large areas with similar ecosystems and climates |
evolution | changes in population over time from one generation to the next |
adaptation | a trait that helps an organism survive |
artificial selection | selective breeding of organisms for desirable traits; this is done by humans and does not happen naturally |
resistance | the ability of an organism to be unaffected by a chemical or toxin |
predator | an animal that lives by killing and eating other animals |
prey | an animal that is hunted and killed by another for food |
trophic level | the steps in a food chain or food web between which energy is transferred |
energy | originates from the sun and is transferred when organisms are consumed |
carnivore | a consumer that eats other animals |
herbivore | a consumer that eats plants |
omnivore | a consumer that eats plants and animals |
