| algae | large and diverse group of oxygenic, phototrophic, eukaryotic microorganisms; they are eukaryotic, which means they have a nucleus. |
| antiseptic | reduces the number of miccroorganisms on the skin |
| autoclaving | an appliance to sterilize instruments of matrials with steam at high temperature and pressure. |
| culture | growth of microorganisms on a specific nutritious medium in a laboratory |
| disinfectants | a chemical that may destroy or inhibit the growth and reproduction of microorganisms. |
| endemic | a disease that is always present in a specific refion |
| endospore | a latent form that certain bacteria can assume under adverse conditions, in order to survive extreme temperatures, drying, or chemicals |
| epidemics | a disease occurring in higher numbers than usual in a certain population within a given period. |
| fimriae | a hairlike projection on some bacteria |
| hyphae | filamentous or threadlike outgrowths |
| infection | the invasion of an organism's body tissues by disease-causing agents |
| leukocytosis | an above-normal number of white blood cells in the blood |
| leukopenia | a decreased number of white blood cells in the blood |
| lymphadenopathy | a disease affecting the lymph nodes |
| monocytosis | white blood cells that give rise to macrophages and dendritic cells in the immune system. |
| mutation | a change in the genetic makeup (DNA) of a cell, which will be inherited. |
| neutropenia | a deficit of neutrophils in the blood |
| nosocomial | an infection acquired while hospitalized |
| obligate | an organism that cannot survive in the presence of oxygen |
| opportunistic | a microorganism, normally nonpathogenic, that causes infectious disease when the person's resistance is reduced. |
| parasite | an organism that lives on or in another living organism |
| pathogens | a disease causing miccroorganism |
| pili | hair-like appendages on some bacteria for adhesion to tissue and transfer of DNA. |
| prions | an infectious abnormal protein particle, does not contain DNA |
| seizures | sudden, involuntary movement with loss of awareness, caused by uncontrolled neuronal discharge in the brain |
| septicemia | systemic infection arising from bacterial toxins in the circulating blood or bacteria reproducing and spreading through the circulating blood |
| sterilization | absence of all forms of microoganisms |
| toxins | a substance that can harm the body or interfere with its function; poisonous |
| unicellular | a single-celled organism; |
