The Periodic Table
Term | Definition |
---|---|
valence shell | Outermost shell of an atom |
atomic mass | Number of protons plus the number of neutrons |
conductivity | Ability for heat or electricity to flow through it |
neutron | Part of an atom with a neutral charge |
electron | Part of an atom with a negative charge |
malleable | Able to be flattened out |
ductile | Able to be stretched without breaking; not brittle |
proton | Part of an atom with a positive charge |
luster | Ability to reflect light |
reactive | Causes a chemical reaction and releases energy |
family | Also called group; columns on the periodic table (go up and down); Elements in a group have the same number of electrons in the outer level |
period | Rows on the periodic table (side to side); Each row represents the number of energy levels |
Groups | Go up and down (Remember - the word up is in groups); show the number of valence electrons; 18 total. |
Families | another name for groups |
Periods | Go side to side; show the number of electrons shells (or energy levels ); 7 total |
Groups | Elements that are most similar in the same |
An Element | Anything on the periodic table |
Compound | combination of two or more elements that are chemically combined |
Mixture | Physically combined;can be separated |
