| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a SOMA? How big is it? What happens here? | The soma is the cell body--it contains a nucleus and most cell organelles. It is 140 mm in diameter. It is where protein synthesis occurs. |
| What are DENDRITES? | Dendrites are extensions from the soma. They are receptive sites for chemical signals. |
| What is the AXON HILLOCK and what does it do? | It integrates information collected by the dendrites and initiates the action potential in a neuron. |
| What is an AXON ? | Each neuron has ONLY one axon, which generates and conducts signals away from the soma. There are abundant microtubules on the axon for transport. It is also known as a nerve fiber. |
| What are AXON TERMINALS? | It creates a synapse with target cells and contains neurotransmitter-filled vesicles. |
| What are GLIAL CELLS and what do they do? | They are non-excitable and do not transmit electrical signals. THey help in nutrient supply, physical support, consume foreign particles, and insulate axons. |
