| Phonemic Awareness | The ability to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds-(phonemes) in spoken words. |
| Vocabulary/Semantic Understanding | Meaning of words. |
| Grammar/Syntactic Understanding | The rules for using words in sentences. |
| Fluency | Reading with sufficient accuracy (involves automaticity, rate, prosody and accuracy). |
| Phonics | Application of the alphabetical principle; using letter/sounds relationships. |
| Print Awareness | Interest and interaction with print; pretending to read. |
| Print Motivation | Interest in and enjoyment of printed materials. |
| Oral Language | Words understood when heard; words used in speech. |
| Letter Knowledge | Understand letter names and shapes. |
| Phonological Awareness | Ability to understand the sound of language and manipulate of play with speech sounds. |
| Narrative Skills | Ability to retell stories or describe events. |
| Emergent Literacy | Reading-related knowledge and skills that children develop prior to formal instruction in reading. |
| Pragmatic | Understanding the social and cultural use of language. |
| Alphabetic Principle/Graphophonemic | Knowledge is the recognition of letters and the understanding of sound-symbol relationships and spelling patterns. |
