Properties of Matter Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Malleability Capable of being extended or shaped by beating with a hammer or by the pressure of rollers.
Volume The amount of space taken up by an object; measured in cubic units.
Hardness The ability of a substance (as a mineral) to scratch another substance or for itself to be scratched.
Specific Heat The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance one degree Celsius.
Color The property of objects and light sources that may be described in terms of hue, lightness, and brightness; visual perception. ROYGBIV
Density The relationship between an object’s mass and volume using the formula: D=M/V. Also referring to whether an object will sink or float.
Magnetism The property of attracting or repelling certain metals.
Size The measurements of an object. How big or small an object is.
Texture The structure and FEEL of an object.
Solubility The amount of a substance that will dissolve in a given amount of another substance.
Odor The quality of something that relates to the sense of smell.
Viscosity The characteristic of a fluid that resists flow; how well does your substance flow.
Ductility Capable of being drawn out or stretched (as into a wire) thin.
Mass The amount of matter packed into a space or body; weight.
Freezing Point The temperature at which a liquid becomes solid.
Melting Point Temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid.
Taste To test the flavor of something by taking a little into the mouth.
Shape The 2-D or 3-D form of an object. The outline, definite form, or arrangement.
Conductivity The ability to conduct an electrical current; conducting or transmitting.
Phase A physically different kind of matter; also known as a state.
Boiling Point Temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.
