| What is the definition of theme? | The big idea of the story |
| What are some examples of theme? | Perseverance, determination, joy |
| What is the definition of setting? | Time and place in which the story occurs |
| How can setting affect mood of the story or plot? | Is the plot affected by setting Does the setting affect the mood Could these events occur in a different time and place |
| What is first person point of view | Narrator is character in the story. Narrator can’t enter the other characters thoughts. |
| What are the three types of third person point of view? | Omniscient, Limited, and Dramatic |
| What is an omniscient point of view? | Narrator is all knowing. Knowing outsider who knows the thoughts of all the characters. |
| What is a limited-omniscient point of view? | Narrator is outsider who knows thoughts of only 1 character. |
| What is a dramatic/ objective point of view? | Outsider narrator describes only what can be seen or heard. |
| What is Basic situation? | Information you need to know about the setting and characters. |
| What is Conflict or problem? | A struggle between two forces, whether between two or more characters or within an individual. |
| What is the Rising Action? | The events that build to the climax |
| What is the Outcome or Resolution? | Where the conflict is solved. |
| What is Flashback? | Looking back to a past situation |
| What is Foreshadowing? | Clue that predict future events of the story. |
| What are the 4 types of conflict? | Man vs. Man, Man vs. self, man vs. nature, man vs. technology |
| Give an example of man vs.man: | Batman vs. Joker, Captain America vs. Winter Soldier |
| Give an example of man vs. nature: | A boy who has poison ivy. Your town vs. a tornado |
| Give an example of man vs. technology: | You vs. broken i phone |
| Give an example of man vs. himself: | You getting scared of heights |
| What is a simile? Give an example | A comparison of unlike things such as like or as. I am as tall as a giant. |
| What is a metaphor? Give an example | A comparison of unlike things without any words of comparison. It's an iceberg outside |
| What is an idiom? Give an example | A phrase that cannot be understood using ordinary definitions. He refused to back down from his enemies. |
| What is personification? Give an example | Giving human characteristics to human animals or things. The legs of the chair moved. |
| What is a hyperbole? Give an example | An exaggeration that is used for emphasis. Hercules was so hungry he could eat a horse. |
| What is alliteration? Give an example | Several words in a row that begin with the same consonant. Fe-fi-fo-fum |
| What is onomatopoeia? Give an example. | A word that sounds like something it describes. Ex: crash, bang, clunk. |
| How can characters be revealed (4 ways)? | What they say What they do What the narrator or other characters say about him or her How other characters act toward him/her |
| What is a protagonist character? | character around whom the action is centered |
| What is an antagonist character? | The character who is against the protagonist |
| What is a dynamic character? | Character changes through the story. |
| What is a static character? | Character stays the same. |
| What is a round character? | Well developed. Life like and we know them well. |
| What is a flat character? | Not well developed. We don’t really know them |
| What is second person point of view? | The narrator is talking directly to someone- uses you, your, yours |
| What is the climax? | When the conflict is faced directly- the most suspenseful moment |
| External conflict | a conflict, or problem, between two outside forces |
| Internal conflict | a conflict, or problem, within one character |
| Plot | the series of events that move a story forward |
