Plant vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Xylem vascular tissue of a plant that moves water upward from the roots to the parts of the plant
Phloem vascular tissue of a plant that moves the products of photosynthesis through the plant
Photosynthesis plants taking radiant energy, water, and carbon dioxide and converting it into oxygen and glucose
Radiant Energy Energy from light sources like the sun
Chemical Energy Energy released by a chemical reaction
Germinate to develop into a plant or individual, as a seed, spore, or bulb.
Turgor Pressure the pressure of the swollen cell contents against the cell wall. So the plant stands upright
Phototropism Growth or movement of a sessile organism toward or away from a source of light.
Thigmotropism directing growth of an organism in response to environmental contact, as a plant tendril coiling around a string support.
Wilt the drying out, drooping, and withering of the leaves of a plant due to inadequate water supply
Glucose The sugar compound that is made in photosynthesis. C6H12O6
Geotropism The growth of a living organism in response to gravity, as the downward growth of plant roots.
Transpiration lose of water from a plant through its leaves
Pistil The female, ovule-bearing organ of a flower, including the stigma, style, and ovary.
Stamen the pollen-bearing organ of a flower, consisting of the filament and the anther.
Roots a part of the body of a plant that develops, grows downward into the soil, anchoring the plant and absorbing nutriment and moisture.
Seedling A young plant that is grown from a seed.
Stem the main body of that portion of a tree, shrub, or other plant which is above ground; trunk; stalk.
leaves one of the expanded, usually green organs borne by the stem of a plant.
