anton van leeuwenhoek he used the simple microscope to observe pond water, he found small organisms which he called "animalcules"
robert hooke documented small compartments and named them for the cubicles in a monastery ("cells")
robert brown he found that in every cell there was something circular and centrally located and called it a nucleus
mathias schleiden / theodor schwann collected samples of living things and found that all living things are made up of cells
rudolf virchow discovered that cells divide to make new cells (ex - mitosis)
