All living things have CELLS Organisms can be unicellular (1 cell) or multicellular (many cells) A cell is the basic unit of life.
All living things RESPOND TO CHANGE A stimulus is anything that causes a reaction or change. A response is the reaction to the stimulus. Example - touching a hot pot (stimulus); pulling your hand away (response) Homeostasis: maintaining a constant internal balance
All living things have the ability to REPRODUCE Without reproduction, living things would not exit to replace the organisms that die.
All living things have DNA DNA controls the structure and function of cells; cells of living organisms contain DNA (passed on through heredity)
All living things OBTAIN AND USE ENERGY Metabolism: making food, breaking down food, moving materials into and out of cells, building cells
All living things GROW AND DEVELOP Unicellular (1 cell) organisms get bigger. Multicellular (many cells) organisms get larger and grows in the number of cells (think of the cute puppy getting bigger)
All living things ADAPT over time. Living things will evolve over a long period time in order to survive; otherwise, they will become extinct.
