---|---|
All living things have CELLS | Organisms can be unicellular (1 cell) or multicellular (many cells) A cell is the basic unit of life. |
All living things RESPOND TO CHANGE | A stimulus is anything that causes a reaction or change. A response is the reaction to the stimulus. Example - touching a hot pot (stimulus); pulling your hand away (response) Homeostasis: maintaining a constant internal balance |
All living things have the ability to REPRODUCE | Without reproduction, living things would not exit to replace the organisms that die. |
All living things have DNA | DNA controls the structure and function of cells; cells of living organisms contain DNA (passed on through heredity) |
All living things OBTAIN AND USE ENERGY | Metabolism: making food, breaking down food, moving materials into and out of cells, building cells |
All living things GROW AND DEVELOP | Unicellular (1 cell) organisms get bigger. Multicellular (many cells) organisms get larger and grows in the number of cells (think of the cute puppy getting bigger) |
All living things ADAPT over time. | Living things will evolve over a long period time in order to survive; otherwise, they will become extinct. |
