Emesis Vomitus
Jaundice Yellowish color of the skin or whites of the eyes
GERD Gastroesophageal reflux disease
Dialysis The process of removing waste products from the blood
Diuresis The process of passing large amounts of urine
Bisexual A person who is attracted to both sexes
Heterosexual A person who is attracted to members of the other sex
Homosexual A person who is attracted to members of the same sex
Impotence The inability of the male to have an erection; erectile dysfunction
Transgender A broad term used to describe people who express their sexuality or their gender in other than the expected way; persons who are undergoing hormone therapy or surgery for sexual re-assignment (female to male, or male to female)
Transsexual A person who believes that he or she is a member of the opposite sex
Transvestite A person who dresses or behaves like the other sex for emotional and sexual relief; cross-dresser
Oliguria Scant amount of urine
Dysuria Difficult or painful urination
Hematuria Blood in the urine
Urostomy A surgically created opening between a ureter and the abdomen
Anxiety A vague, uneasy feeling in response to stress
Compulsion Repeating an act over and over again
Defence mechanism An unconscious reaction that blocks unpleasant or threatening feelings
Delusion False belief
Delusion of grandeur An exaggerated belief about one’s importance, wealth, power, or talents
Hallucination Seeing, hearing, smelling, or feeling something that is not real
Obsession A recurrent, unwanted thought, idea, or image
Paranoia A disorder of the mind. False beliefs (delusions) about a person or situation.
Personality The set of attitudes, values, behaviors, and traits of a person
Phobia An intense fear
Psychosis A state of severe mental impairment
Stressor The event or factor that causes stress
Suicide contagion Exposure to suicide or suicidal behavior within one’s family, one’s peer group, or media reports of suicide
Withdrawal syndrome The person’s physical and mental response after stopping or severely reducing the use of a substance that was used regularly
Panic An intense and sudden feeling of fear, anxiety, terror, or dread
Cognitive function Involves memory, thinking, reasoning, ability to understand, judgement, and behavior
Delirium A state of sudden, severe confusion and rapid changes in brain function
Dementia The loss of cognitive function that interferes with routine personal, social, and occupational activities
Pseudodementia False dementia
Sundowning Signs, symptoms, and behaviors of Alzheimer’s Disease increase during house of darkness
Diplegia Similar body parts are affected on both sides of the body
Spastic Uncontrolled contractions of skeletal muscles
Developmental disability A disability occurring before 22 years of age
Advance directive A document stating a person’s wishes about healthcare when that person cannot make his or her own decisions
Autopsy The examination of the body after death
Palliative care Care that involves relieving or reducing the intensity of uncomfortable symptoms without producing a cure.
Post-mortem care Care of the body after death
Reincarnation The belief that the spirit or soul is reborn in another human body or another form of life
Rigor mortis The stiffness or rigidity of skeletal muscles that occurs after death
Terminal illness An illness or injury from which the person will not likely recover
End-of-life care The support and care given during the time surrounding death
Inherited That which is passed down from parents to children
