| Ambulation | The act of walking |
| Contracture | The lack of joint mobility caused by abnormal shortening of a muscle |
| Orthostatic hypotension | Abnormally low blood pressure cause when the person suddenly stands. Also called postural hypotension. |
| Range of motion (ROM) | The movement of a joint to the extent possible without causing pain |
| Syncope | A brief loss of consciousness; fainting |
| Glycosuria | Sugar in the urine |
| Henatoma | A swelling that contains blood |
| Hemoptysis | Bloody sputum |
| Melena | A black, tarry stool |
| Embolus | A blood clot that travels through the vascular system until it lodges in a blood vessel |
| General anesthesia | The loss of consciousness and all feeling or sensation |
| Local anesthesia | The loss of feeling or sensation in a small area |
| Regional anesthesia | The loss of feeling or sensation in a large area of the body |
| Sedation | A state of quiet, calmness, or sleep produced by a drug |
| Thrombus | A blood clot |
| Contusion | A closed wound caused by a blow to the body; a bruise |
| Dehiscence | The separation of wound layers |
| Excoriation | Loss of the epidermis. Caused by scratching or when skin rubs against skin, clothing, or other material. |
| Gangrene | A condition in which there is death of tissue |
| Phlebitis | Inflammation of a vein |
| Colonized | The presence of bacteria on the wound surface or in wound tissue. The person does not have signs and symptoms of an infection. |
| Eschar | Thick, leathery dead tissue can be loose or attached to the skin. It is often black or brown. |
| Slough | Dead tissue that is shed from skin. It is usually light colored, soft, and moist, and may be stringy at times. |
| Hyperthermia | A body temperature that is much higher than the person’s normal range |
| Hypothermia | A very low body temperature |
| Apnea | The lack or absence of breathing |
| Atelectasis | The collapse of a portion of the lung |
| Biot’s respiration | Rapid and deep respiration’s followed by 10-30 seconds of apnea |
| Bradypnea | Slow respiration; respirations are fewer than 12 per minute. |
| Cheyne-Stokes respiration | Respirations gradually increase in rate and depth and then become shallow and slow. Breathing may stop for 10-20 seconds. |
| Hypoxemia | A reduced amount of oxygen |
| Hypoxia | Cells do not have enough oxygen |
| Kussmaul respiration | Very deep and rapid respirations |
| Orthopnea | Breathing deeply and comfortably only when sitting |
| Respiratory arrest | When breathing stops |
| Prosthesis | An artificial replacement for a missing body part |
| Aphasia | The total or partial loss of the ability to use or understand language (phasia) |
| Tinnitus | A ringing, roaring, hissing, or buzzing sound in the ears or head |
| Vertigo | Dizziness |
| Metastasis | The spread of cancer to other body parts |
| Arthroplasty | Surgical replacement of a joint |
| Congenital | To be born with |
| Dysrhythmia | An abnormal heartbeat |
