Dehiscence Separation of the layers of a surgical wound; may be partial, superficial, or a complete disruption of the surgical wound
Exudate fluid rich in protein and cellular elements oozes out of blood vessels due to inflammation
Purulent Drainage aka Pus; thick consistency; “milky” appearance; green, yellow, brown, or white color; distinct odor
Sanguineous Drainage Bloody drainage; Reddish, thin and watery
Serosanguineous Drainage clear, pink, watery, blood-tinged drainage; Mixture of serum and red blood cells
Serous Drainage Composed of clear, amber, thin and watery; Clear drainage
Evisceration Protrusion of viscera through an incision
