TermDefinition
Cell Theory 1. All living things are made of one or more cells. 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in organisms. 3. All cells arise from existing cells.
Cell Membrane Outer layer that encloses the cell and separates the outside of a cell from the cell interior.
Cytoplasm The material inside a cell.
Cytoskeleton Tiny fibers that hold cell organelles in place.
Ribosomes Cellular structures on which proteins are made
Prokaryote Single cell organism that lacks a nucleus and other internal compartments.
Cell wall Solid wall made of proteins and other nutrients that surround the cell membrane.
Flagella Long thread like structures that enable movement in cells.
Eukaryote An organism who's cells have a nucleus.
Nucleus An internal compartment that houses the cell's DNA.
Organelle A structure that carries out specific activities in a cell.
Cilia Short hair like structures that protrude from the surface of some Eukaryotic cells.
Phospholid A lipid made of a phosphate group and two fatty acids.
Lipid Bilayer In a cell membrane, the phospholipids are arranged in a double layer.
Golgi Apparatus A set of flat membrane bound sacs that serves as the packaging and distribution center of the cell.
Lysomes Small spherical organelles that contain one cell's digestive enzymes.
Mitochondria An organelle that harvests energy from organic compounds to make ATP, the primary cell energy.
Prokaryotic Cell Features No nucleus, has a cell wall, and has no internal structure.
Eukaryotic Cells Has a nucleus, does not have a cell wall, and has internal structure.
Diffusion The movement of a substance form a high area of concentration to a low are of concentration.
Osmosis The diffusion of water through cells.
Hypertonic Solution Solution has less density than cell
Isotonic Solution Solution has same density as cell
Hypotonic Solution Solution has a greater higher density than cell
