PlateMotion Concepts

Key concepts from the Plate Motion Unit

QuestionAnswer
What is the Earth's geosphere's outer layer made of? hard, solid rock
If a team of scientists drill into the ocean floor and also drill under farm land what will they find under the water and soil? Underneath both the ocean and soil, Earth's outer layer is hard solid rock.
The Earth's outer layer is divided into sections. What do we call these sections? plates
Do plates move? Yes.
What is below the hard solid rock (crust, outer layer of the geosphere)? soft, solid rock
What is the soft, solid rock called? mantle
What happens at plate boundaries where the plates are moving away from each other? Rock rises from the mantle and hardens, adding new solid rock to the edges of the plates
What happens at plate boundaries where plates are moving toward each other? One plate moves underneath the other and sinks into the mantle.
At what rate to plates move? Plates travel at a rate too slow to be experienced by humans but can travel great distances over time (millions of years).
