Stages of Reading
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Emergent readers | Understand that print contains meaningful information. Knows left to right eye movement and can use pictures to help distinguish words |
| Early readers | Have mastered reading readiness skills and can read simple text w/success. They are developing a list of high frequency words. They notice features like punctuation and capitalization |
| Newly fluent or transitional readers | Can read w/relative fluency and comprehension. They enjoy reading from several genres and can handle more challenging vocabulary |
| Bottom up approach | From parts to whole. Begins with phonemes and graphemes and expands into syllables, words, sentences, paragraphs, and then whole reading selections |
| Top down approach (meaning based) | Begins with the whole and then proceeds to individual parts. Contrasts with the emphasis on phonics. Encouraged to write journal entries, letters, or lists as opposed to fill in the blanks |
