| arbitration | a formal process to submit a decision |
| assumption of risk | a defense to a lawsuit |
| autonomy | ability to make an independent decision |
| beneficence | acting in the best way possible |
| bill | a law purposed by the legislative body |
| case law | law established by decisions of previous court cases |
| civil law | law that regulates relationships and interactions |
| cloning | producing identical cells or individuals |
| common law | unwritten body of law based on general custom |
| comparative negligence | a defense to a lawsuit that establishes part responsibility for injury |
| contingency | a condition that is met before contract binding |
| contributory negligence | a defense to a lawsuit that establishes any/all responsibility for injury |
| controlled substance | a drug that can be addictive and abused |
| crime | a violation of a law |
| criminal law | law that regulates offenses against the public warfare |
| defendant | person or group against the public warfare |
| deposition | a testimony under oath before the trial |
| do-not-resuscitate (DNR) | an order signed by a physician to not resuscitate a patient if he/she stops breathing or their heart stops |
| Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) | the federal agency that enforces the Controlled Substance Act |
| Duty | job; commitment to act in a certain way |
| Emancipated Minor | someone under the age of 18 that has the legal rights of an adult |
| Embezzlement | stealing of funds or property from an employer or client |
| Ethics | knowledge of different behaviors and beliefs |
| felony | a serious crime punishable of death or imprisonment |
| fidelity | faithfulness |
| fraud | intentional deception |
| Gene Therapy | giving patients new genes or parts to treat conditions |
| Genetic Engineering | making, altering or repairing genetic material |
| Health Care Proxy | a legal document that names an agent to make decisions about a persons medical care if they no longer can |
| Informed Consent | agreement to a procedure after giving the possible effects and consequences of the procedure |

| Licensure | process of giving a license |
| litigation | the process of taking a lawsuit through the courts |
| living will | a document that states what medical care someone wants if he or she becomes unable to state what they want or do not want |

| malpractice | negligence by a professional |
| Mature Minor | someone under the age of 18 that has the maturity of an adult to give consent to some medical procedures |
| Mediation | negotiation by a third party to help to parties resolve a dispute |
| Medical Durable power of Attorney | a written authorization to make health care decisions for someone Incase they become incapacitated |
| Misdemeanor | a less serious crime punishable of imprisonment of less than a year |
| Misfeasance | performing a legal act in an improper way |
| Negligence | failure to act as a reasonably prudent person |
| Nonfeasance | failure to perform an act that should have been performed, resulting in injury |
| Plaintiff | the person or group making the complaint |
| Prescription | an order to a pharmacist to dispense a supply of medication |
| Privilege | a special immunity that protects against legal liability |
| Prudent | using care or common sense |
| Reciprocity | automatic issuing of a license in one state to a holder in another state |
| Res ipsa loquitur | a legal doctrine that assumes negligence because of the type of injury |
| Respondeat superior | a legal doctrine making an employer liable for the negligent acts of employees |
| Right | a claim that is expected to be honored |
| Standard Care | level of appropriate care required |
| Statue of Limitations | a law limiting the time period for beginning a law suit |
| Statutory Law | law purposed by a legislative body |
| Stem Cells | cells with the capacity to make different body tissues |
| Subpoena | a court order for a witness to appear and give a testimony |
| Subpoena duces tecum | a court order to bring documents or records |
| Tort | an injury or wrong against a person/property that doesn't involve breach on contract |
