Mineral Vocab Grade 8 (LV)

TermDefinition
mineral A solid that is non-living (Inorganic), formed by nature and has a crystal structure with a definite chemical composition.
crystal (crystallize) Solid, geometric forms of minerals produced by repeated patterns of atoms. The shape of the crystal is determined by how the atoms are arranged.
Inorganic Non-living
Atoms The smallest part of an element that has all the properties of that element. Non-living and living things are made of atoms.
Elements Pure substances that can’t be broken down into simpler substances.
Compounds NEW/different substances made of two or more elements.
Luster The way the surface reflects light. (Metallic, submetallic and nonmetallic)
Streak The color of a mineral in powdered form.
Density The measure of how much matter is in a given amount of space. (Mass/Volume=Density)
Hardness (Moh's Scale) a mineral’s resistance to being scratched. (Uses a scale from 1-softest to 10- hardest.)
Streak Plate Unglazed porcelain used to find the color of a mineral in powder form.
Mine Reclamation Return land that is mined back to it’s original state.
Finite A limited resource.
Renewable A resource that is always available or can be replaced in a relatively short time.
Nonrenewable A resource that can’t be replaced in a useful time frame.
Crystallization Atoms are arranged to form a crystal structure
Solution A mixture in which one substance is dissolved into another.
Organic Plant or animal material.
