spermatogensis the maturation of spermatids into sperm
epididymis the site of sperm maturation and storage, curves over the posterior of the corresponding testis
seminifierous tubules a tightly coiled duct, located in the testis, where sperm are produced
oocytes are produced in the ovary and are released during a process called ovulation
spermatic cord a supporting structure of the male reproductive system, extending from a testis to the deep ingunial ring, that includes the ductus (vas) deferens, arteries, veins, lymphatic vessels, nerves, cremaster muscle, and connective tissue
ductus deferens the duct that carries sperm fom the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
leydig cells a type of cell that secretes testosterone' located in the connective tissue between seminiferous tubules in a mature testis
ovaries female gonad that produces oocytes and the estrogens, progesterone, inhibin and relaxin hormones
ovulation the rupture of a mature ovarian (graafin) follicle with discharge of a secondary oocyte into the pelvic cavity
sertoli cells a supporting cell in the seminiferous tublues that secretes fluid for supplying nutrients to sperm and the hormone inhibin, removes excess cytoplasm from spermatogenic cells, and mediates the effects of FSH and testosterone on spermatogenesis
broad ligaments a double fold of parietal peritoneum attaching the uterus to the side of the pelvic cavity
perimetrium the serosa of the uterus
suspensory ligaments a fold of peritoneum extending laterally from the surface of the ovary to the pelvic wall
myometrium the smooth muscle layer of the uterus
endometrium the muscous membrane lining the uterus
follicular cells secrete estrogen
granulsoa cells surrounding the follicular cells
graafin follicles a large, fluid-filled follicle containing a secondary oocyte and surrounding granulosa cells that secrete estrogens
corpus luteum a yellowish body in the ovary formed when a follicle has discharged its secondary oocyte; secretes estrogens, progesterone, relaxin and inhibin
corpus albicans a white fibrous patch in the ovary that forms after the corpus luteum regresses
