Chemistry of Life

QuestionAnswer
Every physical thing, living or not, is made up of what? Atoms
What is an atom? The smallest basic unit of matter.
What are the 3 types of smaller particles that atoms consist of? Protons, Neutrons, and electrons
_______ are much smaller particles outside the nucleus Electrons
________ have a positive electrical charge. Protons
________ have a negative electrical charge. Electrons
What forms the center of the atom, or the nucleus Protons and Neutrons
______- are neutral, they have no charge. Neutrons
What is an element? A particular type of atom that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary chemical means.
What are some examples of elements? Hydrogen, oxygen, aluminum and gold
What is a compound? A substance made of atoms of different elements bonded together in a certain ratio.
Name two common compounds? Water and Carbon Dioxide
What distinquishes one element from another? Atoms of different elements differ in the number of protons they have.
When does an ion form? When an atom has gained or lost one or more electrons.
True or False- Compounds consisting only of ions easily dissolve in water? True
How do positive ions form? The atom loses one or more electrons and becomes positively charged because it has more protons than electrons.
How to negative ions form? An atom that gains one or more electrons becomes negatively charged because it has more electrons than protons.
How do ionic bonds form? through the electrical force between oppositely charged ions.
What is an example of an ionic bond? Salt or Sodium Chloride
What forms when atoms share a pair of electrons?q Covalent Bonds
What is a molecule? two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
