Ecosystems
| Term | Definition |

| Biotic factors | The living parts of an ecosystem are called biotic factors. |
| Abiotic factors | Nonliving things in ecosystems are called abiotic factors. Examples: soil, water, temperature, sunlight |
| Organism | A single form of life; the simplest form of organization in ecology. |
| Population | All members of one kind of organism that live in a particular area. |
| Communities | A group of different populations of organisms |
| Ecosystem | A collection of different communities and the abiotic factors. |
| Niche | The specific role and organism plays in the ecosystem |
| Food chain | The flow of energy from one organism to the next. |
| Food web | Shows the interactions among many different food chains in a single ecosystem. |
| Producer | Organism that can create its own food through the process of photosynthesis. |
| Consumer | Organism that feeds on other organisms or organic matter because it cannot make its own food. |
| Decomposer | Organisms that break down dead plants and animals into nutrients for the soil. |
| Scavenger | An animal that feeds off dead or decaying matter. |
