writing terms and parts of a book

topic sentence | a sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph in which it occurs |

thesis statement | usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay |
central idea | the central, unifying element of the story, which ties together |
coherence | the quality of being logical and consistent |
essay | a short piece of writing on a particular subject |
journal | a short piece of writing on a particular subject |
personal narrative | is a prose narrative relating personal experience usually told in first person |
descriptive writing | The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a person |
expository wrighting | The expository essay is a genre of essay that requires the student |
persuasive wrighting | is a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea |
supporting details | is additional information that explains, defines or proves the main idea. |

slang | a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, |

appendix | a section or table of additional matter at the end of a book or document. |
