writing terms and parts of a book

TermDefinition
body A body paragraph is a group of related sentences about a particular topic or idea
topic sentence a sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph in which it occurs
sensory detail Sensory details include sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste.
thesis statement usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay
central idea the central, unifying element of the story, which ties together
coherence the quality of being logical and consistent
essay a short piece of writing on a particular subject
journal a short piece of writing on a particular subject
personal narrative is a prose narrative relating personal experience usually told in first person
descriptive writing The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a person
expository wrighting The expository essay is a genre of essay that requires the student
persuasive wrighting is a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea
supporting details is additional information that explains, defines or proves the main idea.
plagiarism plagiarism
transitions the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another.
slang a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal,
voice . The author's voice refers to a writer's style, the quality that makes their writing unique
subjective based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.
objective not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts.
primary source A primary source is an original document
secondary source information is one that was created later by someone who did not experience first-hand
title\copyright pages the name of a book, composition, or other artistic work.
table of condense the things that are held or included in something
index an alphabetical list of names, subjects, etc., with references to the places where they occur, typically found at the end of a book.
footnotes an ancillary piece of information printed at the bottom of a page.
bibliography a list of the books referred to in a scholarly work, typically printed as an appendix.
glossary an alphabetical list of terms or words found in or relating to a specific subject, text, or dialect, with explanations;
appendix a section or table of additional matter at the end of a book or document.
