| Antecubital Space | The surface of the arm in front of the elbow. |
| Anticoagulant | A substance that inhibits blood clotting. |
| Buffy Coat | A thin, light-colored layer of white blood cells and platelets that lies between a top layer of plasma and a bottom layer of red blood cells when an anti coagulant has been added to the blood specimen. |
| Evacuated Tube | A closed glass or plastic tube that contains a premeasured vacuum. |
| Hematoma | A swelling or mass of coagulated blood caused by a break in a blood vessel. |
| Hemoconcentration | An increase in the concentration of the nonfilterable blood components in the blood vessels, such as red blood cells , enzymes, iron, and calcium, as a result of a decrease in the fluid content of the blood. |
| Hemolysis | The breakdown of blood cells. |
| Osteochondritis | Inflammation of bone and cartilage. |
| Osteomyelitis | Inflammation of the bone or bone marrow as a result of bacterial infection. |
| Phlebotomist | A healthcare professional trained in the collection of blood specimen. |
| Phlebotomy | Incision of a vein for the removal of blood. |
| Plasma | The liquid part of the blood consisting of a clear straw-colored fluid that comprises 55% of the blood volume. |
| Serum | Plasma which the clotting factor has been removed. |
| Venipuncture | Puncturing of a vein. |
| Venous Reflux | The back flow of blood into the patients vein. |
| Venous Stasis | The temporary cessation or slowing of the venous blood flow. |
