| biomass | the amount of living matter in a habitat |
| autotroph | another name for producer- it makes its own food |
| trophic level | shows how much energy in the food chain |
| niche | the role an organism has in an ecosystem |
| primary consumer | another name for herbivore- eats only plants |
| secondary consumer | they eat herbivores (primary consumers) and are the second ones to eat |
| tertiary consumer | they are the top consumers |
| decomposer | eat decayed organisms and return nutrients to the soil |
| abiotic | nonliving factors in an ecosystem |
| biotic | all the living factors in an ecosystem |
| ecosystem | all of the abiotic and biotic factors coming together in a given area |
| food chain | how energy flows in an ecosystem through one path |
| food web | overlapping food chains that show the energy flow and interaction among organisms |
| detrivore | an organism that feeds on dead organic matter ( a type of decomposer) |
