Teniae Coli Bands of longitudinal muscle fibers in the large intestine.
Rugae Longitudinal folds in the mucosa of the stomach.
Pyloric Sphincter Valve between the stomach & first part of the small intestine.
Plicae Circulares Circular folds in the mucosa & submucosa of the small intestine.
Peristalsis Rhythmic contractions of the intestine that move food a long the digestive tract.
Palate Roof of the mouth.
Mesentery Extensions of peritoneum that are associated with the intestine.
Mastication The process of chewing.
Lower Esophageal Sphincter Valve between the esophagus & stomach.
Ilecocecal The valve between the small & large intestine.
Hydrolysis Chemical breakdown of complex molecules by the addition of water.
Gingiva Gums.
Gastrin Hormone secreted by the endocrine glands in the stomach.
Gastric Juice The secretions of the exocrine gastric glands.
Fauces Opening from oral cavity to the orophraynx.
Deglutition The process of swallowing
Defecation The expulsion of the indigestible wastes, or feces, through the anus.
Chyme The semi-fluid mixture of food and gastric juice that leaves the stomach through the pyloric sphincter.
Absorption The passage of digestive end products from the gastrointestinal tract into the blood or lymph.
